The martial eagle is the second largest eagle in Africa and one of the most powerful birds of prey on the continent. It can take prey as large as small antelope and monitor lizards, and its eyesight is sharp enough to spot a target from several kilometres away. It is not a bird that is easily approached, and it is not a bird that stays in one place for long.
This individual was spotted flying toward a treeline in Moremi Game Reserve. The approach required speed and positioning — moving quickly to get ahead of the bird before it settled, then waiting as it moved from tree to tree. It finally paused long enough for this portrait. The martial eagle is a personal favourite, and this image reflects the effort that finding one usually demands.

The Story Behind the Shot
Three Kings was captured in Nxai Pan National Park, Botswana, during the peak of the dry season—a time when the park's pumped waterholes become the only reliable lifelines for miles around.
I returned to Nxai Pan specifically with this image in mind. Days earlier, I had noticed how the massive, solitary elephant bulls would emerge from the brush and move across the open Makgadikgadi landscape toward the water in the late afternoon light.
The terrain there is entirely flat, exposed, and ancient-feeling. It gives the elephants a natural, unobstructed path through the swirling dust and golden grass. On this particular afternoon, I was completely alone. I was able to position myself safely, very low beneath my safari vehicle. That specific, ground-level angle granted the lead bull an immense presence and stature, capturing him exactly as he felt in that moment: powerful, heavy, and timeless.
What I love most about this photograph is the raw sense of movement. These bulls were thirsty and walking with profound purpose. The absolute moment they picked up the distant scent of water, their entire posture shifted. Their heads swung, their massive ears flared, and their trunks loosened with every stride.
There is a distinct, rhythmic swagger to an old elephant bull walking toward water in the dry season—a unique pace and fierce character that completely disappears once he has finally drunk, fed, and settled again.
This image is entirely about that fleeting moment right before relief: the irresistible pull of water, the heavy weight of the dry season, and three old kings moving with quiet authority across an ancient landscape.

Framing & Display Guide
- Frame Size Needed: This print features a built-in white border. It is designed to fit directly into a standard 40 × 30 inch frame without requiring an additional custom mount.
- Custom Matting: If you prefer an extra decorative border, we recommend choosing a larger frame (such as 44 × 34 inches) and adding a custom 2-inch acid-free mat board.
- Glazing & Care: We highly advise using UV-protective glass or museum acrylic to eliminate reflections and preserve the deep blacks over time. Avoid placing the artwork in damp rooms or in direct, intense sunlight.
Handling Note: To protect the delicate fine-art surface, we highly recommend leaving the print inside its protective tube until it reaches your professional framer, or handling it strictly by the edges using clean cotton gloves.
