Three Kings — Elephant Fine Art Print | Nxai Pan, Botswana
Three Kings was made in Nxai Pan National Park, Botswana, during the dry season, when the park's pumped waterholes become some of the only reliable sources of water for miles around.
I had returned to Nxai Pan with this image in mind after noticing how the large elephant bulls would move across the open Makgadikgadi landscape towards water in the late afternoon light. The land there is flat, exposed, and ancient-feeling, giving the elephants a natural path through the dust and grass.
On this afternoon, I was alone and able to position myself safely very low beneath the vehicle. That lower angle gave the lead bull more presence and stature, making him feel as powerful as he looked in that moment.
What I love most about this photograph is the movement. These bulls were thirsty and walking with purpose. Once they had picked up the scent of water, their whole posture changed. Their heads swung, their ears moved, and their trunks loosened with each step. There is a certain swagger to an old elephant bull walking towards water in the dry season — a pace and character that disappears once he has drunk, fed, and settled again.
This image is about the moment before relief: the pull of water, the weight of the dry season, and three old bulls moving with quiet authority across an ancient landscape.
